the newspaper and stamp collages (1975-1979)
Coller : fr. to stick. Collage, long considered merely the decoration of a Victorian screen, is a technique the use of which has been current within the higher visual arts for at least a century, and I doubt there is a painter of these past 60 years who, in one way or another, has not given it at least a try. The term, however, is hardly precise, covering as it does any piece of paper with some glue on the back. In Jack’s hands it has indeed been almost everything, from representation to abstraction, deconstruction to reconstruction, sometimes all at once.
